Come here for the views! Seriously, it’s gorgeous here, and the good news is you can experience it all without getting out of the car. This is a great spot for fishing (one spot that’s much harder to get to up a short but steep, rocky incline but also one right from the car if you follow signs for Rd 8502A), but also for a scenic overlook of the Monte Cristo Gulch area. You may even catch a glimpse of a mountain goat, since they are well-known in this area.
There’s also 3 really wonderful and lesser known camping spots here (so hopefully a good spot to avoid the crowds!) you can access without a permit. They are on mostly level ground, have great shade and privacy, and are right on the water. There’s potentially a few more spots if you aren’t picky. The best part is you can drive right up but still feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere, and you’re right next to the water. We did it in a 4WD vehicle, but I also saw a 2WD sedan getting in and out without difficulty.
